“Doorways to Havana,” is inspired by the vibrant, textured layers of history and culture that define the streets of Havana, Cuba. On a trip to Havana 25 years ago, I wandered around the backstreets and alleyways rarely ventured by tourists. I was struck by the beautiful, ornate doorways of the houses, with their peeling paint that represented the faded glory of the city. Those images stayed in my mind for many years, and when the time was right, I felt compelled to represent my memories of those doorways on canvas. Thus, “Doorways of Havana” was born.
In this piece, I used a rich palette of earthy tones, interspersed with pops of bright colors, to reflect the weathered facades and the lively spirit of Havana. The textured brushstrokes and layered colors are meant to evoke the sense of age and beauty that come from a city that has seen so much yet remains full of life and color. The abstract forms suggest doorways, inviting viewers to imagine the stories behind them and the lives that have passed through.
“Doorways to Havana” is my tribute to the enduring charm and character of Havana. Through this painting, I wanted to share the sense of discovery and nostalgia that comes with exploring a place where the past and present coexist so vividly. It’s a reminder of the beauty that can be found in the layers of history and the enduring spirit of a city that continues to inspire.
